What can this powerful nutrient do for you? The better question might be, what can’t it do for you?

Are you looking to:

  • Maintain or lose weight?
  • Increase energy?
  • Build or sculpt lean muscle?
  • Improve your mobility?
  • Age more healthfully?

Consuming enough protein helps maximize all these areas. Research shows the recommended daily intake for protein (0.8g/kg bodyweight) to be too low to thrive in these areas.1 For healthier weight loss, maximizing exercise/fitness, and supporting healthy aging, the recommendation is between 1.4-2.2g/ kg bodyweight. For a 150 lb. person, this is between 95 g – 150 g/day: the higher end of this range to support high resistance training activity.2

How can I consume more protein?

Split it up! The human body is in a constant state of building and breaking down and consuming protein regularly throughout the day, every 3-4 hours, is typically best to maximize its benefits.3 For most people, 20-30 g per meal is enough.

What types of protein should I consume?

Consider all types of protein sources, including lean animal sources as well as plant-based ones. Complete sources offer the most bang for your protein buck and are typically of animal origin. Complete proteins contain the proper amounts of all essential amino acids obtained through the diet. However, each protein source offers a unique amino acid makeup and benefits. For this reason, a variety of sources is encouraged.

Great protein sources include chicken, beef, fish, soy, and dairy, such as yogurt, cottage cheese, and various protein powders. High-quality protein powders such as whey, milk protein, pea, or collagen are easy ways to add more protein to your diet. Consider adding these to an anytime shake or mixed into foods such as oatmeal, yogurt, or smoothies. If you are missing a protein source at mealtime, research shows adding a protein drink can help maximize the benefits of protein.4  The possibilities are endless!

Whether a dairy protein like whey or milk, plant protein like pea, or the versatile collagen protein- try adding more protein into your diet to maximize your health and fitness goals!
